Fair questions

How does the recipe nutrition calculator work?

It reads each ingredient line, matches it to a food in the USDA database and turns the amount into grams using USDA's own cup, spoon and piece weights. Then it adds everything up and divides by the number of servings.

Where do the numbers come from?

From USDA FoodData Central, the US government's food composition database, which covers 364 common ingredients here. Every counted line shows the USDA food it was matched to, so you can check it.

Why does a line say not counted?

When the calculator can't be sure, it leaves the line out instead of guessing. That covers a food it doesn't know, a line with no amount, a cut with bones in it, or a piece it can't size. Add a weight in grams or ounces and the line will count.

How accurate is it?

As accurate as the amounts you give it, and weights work best. Cups and spoons use USDA's average weights. Pieces like a chicken breast or a salmon fillet vary a lot, so those lines tell you. Enter raw amounts unless the line says cooked, like cooked rice.

Is this an official Nutrition Facts label?

No. It uses the US label's rounding and daily values, but it's an estimate for home cooking, not for packaging. Trans fat, added sugars and vitamin D are left out because USDA has no reliable figures for them in many ingredients.

Can I use a link to a recipe?

Yes, for pages that publish their recipe data, which most big recipe sites do. If a page doesn't, paste the ingredient list instead. The calculator is free and needs no signup.
